The Brief: Inspect Every Pylon, Disrupt Nothing

Aerometrics was engaged to carry out a detailed condition survey of the floodlight pylons at Luton Town Football Club. Each pylon carries dense arrays of fixtures, brackets and fixings at height - traditionally inspected from a MEWP or by operatives working at height on the structure itself.

The objective was a complete photographic record of every fixture and fixing, captured safely, without road closures, MEWP hire or a single person leaving the ground.

The Challenge: Flying Inside an Airport’s No-Fly Zone

The stadium sits within London Luton Airport’s flight restriction zone, where drone operations are prohibited without explicit clearance. Aerometrics coordinated directly with Luton Airport to plan and authorise the operation, agreeing flight windows, altitudes and contingency procedures before a propeller turned.

On site, that planning translated into a tightly controlled operation: pre-notified schedules, continuous airspace awareness and disciplined flight paths around the structures.

The Approach: 120× Zoom, Safe Standoff

The survey was flown with the DJI Matrice 4TD, whose zoom camera reaches up to 120× magnification. That reach let the aircraft hold a safe standoff distance from each pylon while still resolving individual fixings, weld lines and corrosion in areas that are difficult to see from any ground position.

Every fixture was captured methodically, pylon by pylon, producing a structured photographic record the club’s engineers can review, compare season on season, and act on with confidence.

The Outcome: Six MEWP Deployments Avoided

The drone survey removed the need for at least six separate MEWP deployments and eliminated working at height entirely. No hire costs, no access permits, no personnel on the structure - and no disruption to the stadium below.
